Frequently Asked Questions?
Which organizations can utilize work study students?
On-campus offices and off-campus non-profit agencies that have no religious affiliation (unless the work is clerical or janitorial in nature) may utilize work study students.
How much are we (the organization) required to pay the student?
Usually, the organization pays the student 25% of the total amount of work study money that the student is awarded through financial aid, while the federal government pays the remaining 75%. This is not paid all at once to the student, but rather in standard employee paychecks. If the organization is a non-profit that deals specifically with literacy issues, it may qualify to have the federal government pay 100% of the student's wages.
How much will the student earn per hour?
Refer to IPFW HR website
How many hours per week will the student work?
Work study students typically work 10-15 hours per week. However, they can work as many as they want, until their work study money runs out.
How do I know if a student qualifies for work study?
The student will know if they have received work study money from their award letter from Financial Aid. If the student is unsure, they should check with the Financial Aid Office.
How do we begin the process of hiring a work study student?
- Review the work study checklist [PDF].
- Email a detailed job description to the Financial Aid Office, for approval based on federal-eligibility requirements.
- The position description will then be reviewed by Gerald Curd, Associate Director of Financial Aid, to ensure that it meets the guidelines of a work study position.
- Once the position description has been approved, you will be mailed as assessment form by the Financial Aid Office.
- Complete and send of fax the assessment form and detailed job description to the Financial Aid Office (Fax: 260-481-4159)
- If you need to post the position, you visit the Careers Services Web site and create an account on JobZone. Within 24 hours, the work study job description and qualifications detailed on the posting form will be posted on JobZone and made available for students to view.
- The organization will coordinate all of the interviewing for the position.
- Once the organization has selected its candidate for the position, the work study student's potential supervisor should follow the process on the work study checklist to obtain authorization to utilize FWS funds and to begin the paperwork and contract involved in hiring the work study student.
