IPFW's Committee for the Advancement of Scholarly Teaching and Learning Excellence (CASTLE)
In October 2008 the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) made IPFW an affiliate institution, joining 47 campuses from across the United States and Canada. The Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs designated a steering committee composed of faculty and staff to be responsible for planning activities and projects such as professional conferences, SoTL faculty learning communities, fellowships, grants, awards and other activities that support scholarly teaching and research on teaching and learning. The office of the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs and CELT provide resources for the work of the committee. In 2011 the committee was renamed Committee for the Advancement of Scholarly Teaching and Learning Excellence (CASTLE).
The committee members are:
- Gail Rathbun, CELT Director and Committee Chair (260) 481-6504
- Michael Bendele, Psychology (260) 481-6436
- Michelle Drouin, Psychology (260) 481-6398
- Ludwika Goodson, CELT (260) 481-0692
- Denise Jordan, Nursing (260) 481-0250
- Joon Kim, Public Policy (260) 481-0133
- Yvonne Zubovic, Mathematical Science (260) 481-6037
CASTLE organized a SoTL conference with scholar and author Kathleen McKinney, Cross Chair in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) at Illinois State University, at which IPFW faculty presented their scholarly teaching. In 2009 and 2011 the committee led IPFW delegations to the annual conference of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL). Click on the link to view a portfolio of the 2011 ISSOTL presentations. Members of the committee wrote an article about its work for Transformative Dialogues, an electronic journal about teaching published in Canada.

Protocols for Using Human Subjects in Research
If you use any student work, photos, recordings, or texts of any kind in a presentation or paper given outside the university, you must apply for approval to conduct research involving human subjects. Even if you are not sure that you will use the data, it's a good idea to apply anyway.
Purdue's Committee on the Use of Human Research Subjects requires investigators, key personnel, and graduate students involved in the use of human subjects to first complete the Nuts and Bolts workshop, which is available in Blackboard, by contacting Jeannie DiClementi, IPFW’s Institutional Research Board representative. Investigators must also complete the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) online tutorial to be certified as eligible to engage in human subject research. For complete information, see the Purdue Human Research Protection page and the IPFW Use of Human Subjects in Research page.
Need help with your IRB protocol application? Are you uncertain as to how to approach requested revisions? If so, the IPFW IRB Mentoring program is now in place to help. IRB Mentoring provides assistance to those who need or want help in preparing an IRB protocol application. Please do not contact the mentors directly. If you wish to utilize the service of one of the mentors, please contact Pat Farrell at (260) 481-6164 or email.

Support for SoTL projects
The Mack Center, located at IUPUI, exists to stimulate inquiry in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, to recognize, honor, and increase the influence of that scholarly inquiry, and to foster change with the underlying goal of promoting excellence in education at Indiana University, in the United States, and internationally. The Mack Fellows' work is at the very core of the mission of Indiana University's Mack Center for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Each year a group of fellows is selected from the full-time faculty of IU campuses to advance the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). The deadline for proposals is February 1.
