Internships: International Students
As an international IPFW student, you are eligible for degree-related work off-campus (Curricular Practical Training), or what we commonly call an internship. The Office of Career Services coordinates non-academic credit internships. In order to qualify, you must be working toward an Indiana or Purdue degree, and an internship must relate to your academic area of study.
Curricular Practical Training Requirements:
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is an employment option available to F-1 Visa status students where the practical training employment is considered to be an integral part of the curriculum or academic program.
Employment for 20 hours or less per week while you are enrolled in classes is considered part-time CPT. There is no limit as to how long you can work as part-time CPT status.
Employment for more than 20 hours per week is considered full-time CPT. There is no limit to how long you can work as full-time CPT status. However, if you accrue 12 months or more of full time CPT before graduating, you will lose your eligibility for applying for OPT.
Optional Practical Training (OPT)
OPT is up to 12 months of work in the United States in a job that is related to your major. You may choose to take advantage of this benefit before or after graduation. OPT is commonly used by international students after graduation.
To apply for OPT, you must do the following:
1. Meet with staff in the International Students Office in Kettler Hall, Room 104 to obtain an OPT application.
2. Attend the OPT workshop and schedule an appointment with the Director of International Student Services. You must bring the following items with you to the appointment:
- A completed IPFW OPT application form
- A completed I-765 form
- 2 passport-size photographs (white background, 2 inches by 2 inches in size)
- Photocopies of all I-20 forms that were previously issued to you
- A photocopy of your passport, visa, and I-94 (photocopy both the front and back sides)
- A check or money order ($340) made payable to the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS). No cash will be accepted.
If you have additional questions about OPT, please contact the International Student Services office at (260) 481-6034.
