College of Arts and Sciences Commemorates 25th Anniversary with Beineke Medal Presentation

FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Twenty-five years ago, the College of Arts and Sciences was formed at Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) when the academic units of both IU and Purdue reorganized to reflect the consistency of their missions.

To commemorate the occasion, the College decided to commission a medal and award it to one of its faculty. The Lowell W. Beineke Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Liberal Arts and Sciences is named in honor of Lowell W. Beineke, the Jack Schrey Professor of Mathematics, and “…will be conferred occasionally by the Executive Committee of the College of Arts and Sciences in recognition of outstanding contributions of scholarship, teaching, and service to the liberal arts and sciences,” said Carl Drummond, dean of the college.

The inaugural recipient of the Beineke Award was Beineke himself. Drummond presented the medal to Beineke at the College’s anniversary celebration Tuesday evening, November 27.

Beineke joined the Department of Mathematical Sciences at IPFW in 1965 and is an internationally recognized expert in the fields of graph theory and combinatorics. In addition to the extensive and collaborative nature of his mathematical research, Beineke has also made significant contributions through his dedication to teaching and student learning as well as through service to his department, the college, the university, and his profession.

Drummond added that “…the executive committee of the College of Arts and Sciences will occasionally bestow this award on other members of the faculty of the college who have demonstrated a similar commitment to the mission of the college and whose scholarly, teaching, and service contributions are of the highest order.”
