FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Spring semester for the College of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science at Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) has seen its students receiving accolades in various competitions.

For the second straight year, a team of engineering students took top honors at the second annual Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division Undergraduate Design Competition held recently at the facility in southern Indiana.

The team, made up of Andrew Sipe, Matthew Thompson, Ben Davis, Phillip Perlich, and Anthony Zimmerman, all mechanical engineering students, and Wes King, a computer science student, were challenged to design a rapidly deployable mechanism to lift a 50-mm., 600 pound weapon system 40 inches in 5 seconds. IPFW beat teams from the University of Louisville, Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, Tennessee State University, and IUPUI.

IPFW Civil Engineering students fared well at the recent 2012 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Great Lakes Conference held at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. The conference included 17 schools from Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin, including Purdue University, Rose Hulman, Notre Dame, Northwestern, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. IPFW’s teams achieved the following results:

• First Place in Surveying
• Second Place in Geotechnical
• Third Place in the Technical Paper category of the Cement Canoe competition
• Third Place overall
