Bruce Kingsbury, professor of biology, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS), and director of the Environmental Resources Center (ERC) received the Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) 2017-18 Outstanding Research Award.

Kingsbury received a B.A. from Pomona College in 1981, an M.S. from San Diego State University in 1987, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside in 1991. He joined the Department of Biology as an assistant professor in 1992, became professor and chair of biology in 2003, then added the role of ERC director in 2012. He has been the associate dean of COAS since 2014.

Kingsbury’s areas of research include wildlife ecology, behavior, and conservation. He and his graduate students, the “K-Team,” have been involved in numerous studies throughout the Midwest on snakes, turtles, amphibians, birds, and mammals.

He is considered an expert on several imperiled species, including the federally threatened Copper-bellied Watersnake and Eastern Massasauga. Through the ERC, Kingsbury works with colleagues, students, and community partners like the City of Fort Wayne to understand and protect the region’s natural resources.

Kingsbury takes an applied approach in his research. He not only considers the basic ecology of the species, but how that relates to habitat restoration and land management practices.

He founded and now directs the ERC, which is an expansion of the former Center for Reptile and Amphibian Conservation and Management. The mission of the center is “to promote the understanding and conservation of the natural resources of the region through scientific research, educational opportunities, and outreach,” according to Kingsbury.
