High School Science Teachers Learn About Electromagnetic Applications in Workshop at IPFW

FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Science teachers from Leo, Columbia City, Huntington, Lakeland, and Eastbrook high schools are taking part in a three-day workshop at Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) this week.

The workshops began Monday and continue today, Wednesday, December 5, and Friday, December 7, from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the RF/Microwave Laboratory, Room 331 of the Engineering Building. Abdullah Eroglu, associate professor of electrical engineering, organized the workshops and said they are “… designed to demonstrate the ways to integrate the fundamentals of physics with application examples that can be used in classroom environments to capture the imaginations of students and make it fun for them. Radio frequency identification devices (RFIDs) will be used as one of the tools to achieve this integration.”

The workshops are sponsored by the Indiana Space Grant Consortium (INSGC), whose goal is to contribute to the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce to achieve NASA’s strategic goals focused in northeast Indiana by demonstrating electromagnetic applications in everyday life in the classroom environments.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

• NASA’s strategic goals focused in northeast Indiana
• How physics and electromagnetics can contribute to STEM Workforce in northeast Indiana
• Applications of physics and electromagnetics in everyday life
• Use and operation of RFIDs
• Possible ways to integrate Applied Electromagnetics to high school curriculum
