Not all students attend Summer session classes, and financial aid is not automatically awarded for summer, nor is any held in reserve from Fall and Spring semesters.
Summer is a trailing semester, meaning it follows Fall and Spring. Therefore, financial aid eligibility for Summer classes is based on remaining eligibility from the current academic year, not the academic year that begins in the Fall. You will not have any summer financial aid eligibility if you have used all academic year funding for federal aid.
If you are eligible for the Pell Grant, and you did not attend full time either Fall or Spring, you may have eligibility for summer. However, the Pell grant will not cover the full amount of your tuition and fees.
If you have a Chancellor’s or another scholarship that has an option for summer funding, then that could be available to you.
Students eligible for the Child of Certain Veterans or Public Safety Officers Supplemental Grant (CVO) award can use it in Summer. You must have a current FAFSA on file, and if you were selected to complete the verification process, it must be completed before your CVO can be awarded for Summer.
Important note: If there's a chance you may take Summer classes, remember to keep some of your Direct Loan funds available. If you take all of your Direct loan funds in Fall and Spring, you will not have any left for Summer. Direct loans also require you to be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours over the summer enrollment period.

Other Options
If you do not have financial aid eligibility for summer classes, there are other payment options:
Private Loans
If you have used all of your eligibility for the academic year and do not have anything left for summer, you may apply for an outside loan (also called a private education loan or an alternative loan). This type of loan is applied for directly through your lender’s Web site, but there are some key facts to consider:
You can apply for a private loan online at FastChoice
PLUS Loans
The Parent PLUS Loan program is a Federal loan program that helps a parent to fund their contribution to their dependent child’s education. The loan is in the parent’s name and will be repaid by the parent. All PLUS borrowers are required to pass a credit check but if they can not, they might still be able to receive a loan if they can secure a co-signer for the loan. If a parent does not pass the credit check, and they do not secure a co-signer, then the student may be eligible to borrow a limited amount through the Unsubsidized Direct Loan program.
Graduate PLUS loans are available for Graduate students taking summer classes.
