M.S.Ed.: Educational Leadership
Cohort option
The M.S.Ed. program in Educational Leadership blends elements from well-grounded theoretical perspectives with innovative practices in the preparation of educational leaders for entry-level positions in educational organizations. This program provides the degree and license needed to become a K–12 building principal. Learn more about our Professional Studies program.
The goals of the educational leadership program are to develop educators who:
- Possess the skills and knowledge to make effective decisions, manage organizations, and motivate and lead people so that organizational and personal goals are met
- Have the intellectual, personal, and professional preparation to provide services to diverse communities through productive work
- Communicate effectively in speech and writing
- Have command of and contribute to the body of knowledge reflecting research and theory in the field
- Implement IPSB administrative standards

- Strongly qualified faculty have experience as practitioners, including as principals and superintendents. This experience is a nationally-identified qualification for professors of educational leadership. The full-time faculty all possess a Ph.D. or an Ed.D. The faculty have university responsibilities in teaching, research, and service; their work in these areas deepen the quality of their work with future principals
- High-quality practicing administrators as resources
- Strong connection with local school corporations, Indiana State Department of Education, U.S. Department of Education, and national organizations
- Participation in national leadership organizations such as the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration and University Council of Educational Administration
- Meets the national standards for educational leadership programs including the American Association of School Administrators, National Association of Elementary School Principals, and the National Association of Secondary Principals
Application Process for Admittance to Cohort Option
Before you are eligible to register for the graduate-level classes, you must be admitted to the specific graduate program as a degree seeking student. Admission applications may be obtained from the IPFW School of Education, Neff Hall room 250 or contact Vicky Schmidt in the Education Department at 260-481-6450.
To be considered, applicants should submit the following materials:
- Admission application form
- Official transcripts
- Three professional reference letters
- Copy of professional teaching license
- Current resume
- Goal statement: personal and professional
- Application fee of $55

Classes meet one Saturday per month in the Fall and Spring semesters. Summer I courses meet in the evenings for 6 weeks and Summer II courses meet during the day for 6 weeks.
Financial Aid is available
Federal Financial Aid for a graduate student is limited to the Federal Direct Stafford and Graduate PLUS loans. The process requires the completion of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form: www.fafsa.ed.gov (IPFW School Code is 001828). This should be filed at least one month prior to the beginning of the MS Ed program in order for funds to be available at the beginning of class. You will receive an e-mail confirmation from the Financial Aid Office once your application has been received and then another when you have been offered a Stafford loan. The interest rate for these Federal educational loans is at 6.8% for the Stafford loans and 7.9% for the Graduate PLUS program. Loans can be used to cover educational related expenses (tuition, books, living expenses, etc.). Other loan options would be through private educational loan programs.
