Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders

Communication Sciences and Disorders courses concentrate on issues related to understanding and improving the circumstances for individuals who have communication disorders.  At IPFW, the degree which our students will likely be seeking is a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Our graduates will be well prepared for pursuing careers as speech-language pathologists (SLP) or audiologists (AuD) as well as for pursuing many other career choices using the transferable skills developed in the undergraduate major. 

To earn the B.S. with a major in communication sciences and disorders students must fulfill the requirements of IPFW (refer to Part 7 of the undergraduate bulletin) and the College of Arts and Sciences (refer to Part 3 of the undergraduate bulletin).

In addition to the required courses, recommended courses include: PSY 120, PSY 235, PSY 350, EDUC K201, K206. SOC S161 and S163, COM 303, BIOL 204, PHIL 312. The student may wish to consider elective courses that fulfill requirements for a minor that supports preparation of CSD majors.  Many of our students pursue minors in areas such as psychology, linguistics and/or a certificate in gerontology. Total required credits equal 120.

Dual Level, Undergraduate-Graduate Courses

 

CSD 549: Clinical Practice in Speech Language Pathology I, Class 1, Lab. 1–8, Cr. 1–8.

P: 420, 449, or equivalents, with a minimum grade of B in each course and/or consent of advisor. May be repeated for credit. The second in a series of practicum courses designed to provide instruction and practical experience in fundamental diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to speech and language disorders.

 

CSD 550: Aural Rehabilitation for Adults, Cr. 3.

P: 460 or consent of instructor. Theoretical and clinical implications associated with the hearing loss in adults and geriatric adults. Discussion centers on a family-centered team approach, built upon the effective use of amplification and other assistive devices.

 

CSD 551: Aural Rehabilitation for Children, Cr. 3.

P: 460 or equivalent or consent of instructor. An overview of the effects of hearing impairment on language, speech, academic, and psychosocial development. Topics also include communication modalities, and principles and current practices for assessment and intervention.

 

CSD 590: Directed Study of Special Problems, Cr. 1–6. (V.T.)

P: Consent of instructor. May be repeated for credit.
