Registration and Pre-Registration
Graduate students wishing to register for classes must email Dr. Carr with a list of classes they intend to take. After Dr. Carr approves these classes, you then must register via my.ipfw.edu.
Travel Grants to Present Conference Papers
Purdue Graduate Student Government Travel Grants
The Travel Grant Program is sponsored by the Purdue Graduate Student Government and is open to Purdue graduate students on all Purdue campuses. Application forms and other information are available from Purdue Graduate Student Government .
IPFW
There are, generally, matching funds available from the Department of Communication, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Office of Research, Engagement, and Sponsored Progams, and the IPFW Office of Graduate Studies (through its IPFW OGS Travel Grant). Please note that the Office of Graduate Studies grants typically are limited to $250 per person per conference.
In order to be eligible for these, you need to send the following via email to Dr. Carr at least 60 days in advance of departure:
- Your name and student status at the time of the conference (only current students will be considered)
- Your role at the conference (presenting a paper, member of a panel, etc.)
- The title of your presentation and/or the title of the conference panel in which your presentation will occur
- The date and time of your presentation
- The name of the conference you are attending (including dates, location, etc.)
- Your anticipated dates of travel, including your departure and return
- Evidence of acceptance in the form of a conference program and/or acceptance letter from the conference organizers
- The date you submitted an application for the Purdue Graduate Student Government Grant; or, a brief explanation of why you do not plan to apply for this or other outside funds first
- Your estimated expenses for the conference, including airfare, roundtrip mileage, parking, hotel, conference registration, membership dues, and per diem.
IPFW will do its best to match any outside funding received, including the Purdue Graduate Student Government Travel Grant. Especially in cases where there are no matching funds, we cannot guarantee to cover all of your expenses. For evidence of acceptance, a URL of the conference program; or, a PDF or email copy of an acceptance letter should be sufficient. In preparing your estimated expenses including federal mileage rates and per diems, please consult Accounting Services.

The IPFW Department of Communication National Communication Association (NCA) Student Membership Award - due 27 Aug 2013
This award is for students who attend the National Communication Association Annual Convention to give a presentation or otherwise represent the IPFW Department of Communication at the Convention. The award includes a complimentary student membership to NCA and $100 in addition to any other travel grants you receive to attend this Convention. To apply for this award before 27 Aug 2013, email carr@ipfw.edu with the title of your presentation, the title of the panel on which you will be appearing, and any other important factors to consider, such as receiving a best paper award, etc. The Graduate Program Director may use discretion to make this award based on other criteria, depending upon both the quantity of submissions as well as the nature of the role at the Convention.

- Melissa Dietrich worked with Dr. Jane Banks summer, 2004 on Multicultural Services Summer Youth Outreach program on Media Literacy and Communication.
- Showalter, K., Wells, K., Haines, R., and Eracleous, H. worked on a project investigating the role of communication in enacting citizenship in Dr. Hess' course. Briefly, based on Robert Asen's, "A Discourse Theory of Citizenship" {QJS, May, 2004} the students analyzed their efforts in hosting, facilitating, and participating as a participant observer of the 2004 Presidential and Vice Presidential Debates. A submission of a panel of papers by graduate students is being prepared.
