Scholarships Available for Public Policy Students

IPFW Financial Aid

Paul Helmke School of Public & Environmental Affairs Scholarship

Who Qualifies?

  • The junior class recipient must have attained junior class standing by the beginning of the fall semester in which the award begins. One award will also be made for a student of senior standing. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 is required. The recipients are expected to enroll for at least six credit hours in each of the semesters in which they receive the scholarship. To apply, submit a two page (double-spaced, typed) essay discussing how this scholarship and your public policy education will help you to contribute to public and community service in a manner that emulates the values of the career of Paul Helmke, former mayor of the City of Fort Wayne. The award is merit based.

Important Dates

  • All students must fill out the "2013-2014 Common Scholarship" application no later than February 1 to be considered for a public policy scholarship for the next academic year.
  • Submit your double-spaced, typed essay to Prof. B. Joon Kim, Chair of the department scholarship committee, no later than February 28, 2013 for consideration for the following academic year.

What does the Scholarship Cover?

  • This scholarship will be applied toward tuition and fees. One award will be made to a student of junior standing and may be renewed for one additional year based on satisfactory progress in the student’s degree program.
 

Bud Meeks Criminal Justice Scholarship

Who Qualifies?

  • Must be an criminal justice major in the Department of Public Policy.
  • To demonstrate financial need, the applicant must file a 2013-14 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February 1 for the following academic year.

What does the Scholarship Cover?

  • Fees and tuition as funds are available.
 

William D. Perry M.D. Memorial Scholarship

Who Qualifies?

  • Must be pursuing a degree or certificate program within the School of Health Sciences or in the Department of Public Policy public health program. Awards will be based on merit. Students must enroll in a minimum of six credit hours. The awards alternate between the School of Health Sciences and the Department of Public Policy.  For 2013-14, the Department of Public Policy will be selecting a recipient.

What does the Scholarship Cover?

  • Fees and tuition as funds are available.
 

Dr. C. James and Susan Owen Trust Scholarship

Who Qualifies?

  • This scholarship is offered to IPFW students studying for careers in public service (e.g., government, civil service, public health care, criminal justice, etc.). Full time graduate students and undergraduate students who will have attained junior status by the beginning of the fall semester in which the award begins are eligible to apply.
  • The winner of the scholarship will be chosen on the basis of merit and financial need.

Important Dates

  • In order to apply, students will need to fill out at an application and submit it to the department office, with necessary references and documentation, by March 1.

What does the Scholarship Cover?

  • Up to $1500.

 

Indiana Sheriffs’ Association Scholarships

Who Qualifies?

  • Must be a current member of the Indiana Sheriffs’ Association OR a dependent child OR a grandchild or a current member of the association; applications to join ISA are available with the scholarship application. Student must be an Indiana resident and must be committed to pursuing an education and career in law enforcement field at an Indiana college or university. Must be enrolled as a full-time student (minimum of 12 credit hours) and must have taken the SAT or ACT exams.

Important Dates

  • Applications and documentation due to Indiana Sheriffs’ Association by April 1.
  • Applications will be available in the Department of Public Policy office in Neff 260.

What does the Scholarship Cover?

  • The association awards approximately forty $500 scholarships.
