Admission requirements for:

Undergraduate Certification Program

Once teacher candidates are admitted into the Teacher Education Program in the College of Education and Public Policy, they may begin taking classes for the certification in special education. EDUC K305/306 and EDUC K307 are required courses for all General Education Majors; these two courses are also the first required courses for Special Education. Contact one of the special education faculty to set up an appointment to add the Special Education certification at the undergraduate level.

Graduate Certification Program and Master of Science in Education with a Major in Special Education

Admission requirements for the Graduate Certification Program and the Master of Science in Education with a Major in Special Education are consistent with the other IPFW Graduate Education programs. These are:

  • Transcript of BA or BS degree, with a minimum of a 2.5 GPA;
  • Initial teaching license pertinent to teaching K-12 level students;
  • Resume;
  • Position Statement, based on the IPFW College of Education and Public Policy (CEPP) Conceptual Framework, expressing the candidate’s reason for pursuing this degree (minimum of one single-spaced typed page); and
  • Autobiographical Statement about candidate’s experiences in education and interest in Special Education (minimum of one single-spaced typed page).
  • Three letters of recommendation [PDF]

Temporary Non-degree Admission

Students wishing to take graduate courses but not (initially) planning to complete degree or certification requirements may choose to enroll as a temporary graduate student. Temporary graduate students may complete no more than 6 credits every five years.

To apply for temporary admission, complete the Temporary Admission Form available online or as a PDF. If you choose the PDF option, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open and print the file and send it to the College of Education and Public Policy or fax it to 260-481-5408.

Application Fees

Applicants applying for the graduate program should submit nonrefundable application fee of $55.00 to the College of Education and Public Policy in the form of a check or money order.
