Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education
A Bachelor's of Science degree in Secondary Education is intended to prepare students for successful careers as teachers of children in junior high and high school classroom settings. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, students are eligible to apply for an Indiana teaching license through the Indiana Department of Education.
Teaching majors are available in the following subjects: language arts, French, German, Spanish, mathematics, life science, chemistry, earth space science, physics, mathematics, physical science, and social studies (select three or more areas: economics, government and citizenship, psychology, historical perspectives, sociology), and middle school generalist (5-9) (must select two or more areas: language arts, mathematics, science, social studies). Students are encouraged to add licensure areas in any of the above categories.
Students focusing on a teaching major in mathematics, biology, chemistry, or physics receive degrees from Purdue University and should contact the College of Arts and Sciences directly for advisement. All other teaching major areas receive degrees from Indiana University and are advised by the College of Education and Public Policy.
IPFW also offers bachelor's degrees in Visual Arts and Music Education through the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Please contact these departments for more information.
