If additional time is required, the Career Counselor will refer the student to an hour-long appointment.

Here is your chance to capture your ideas onto the page and watch them as they are performed on stage! In this class you will learn the basics of playwriting. Topics covered will include play structure, story and character development, plot, dialogue and much more. And don't worry about writer's block; lots of playwriting prompts will be provided to get your imagination rolling and your words flowing! Act! Dance! Sing! Get cast! This camp can help you become a “triple threat!” You'll learn how to make strong acting choices when doing a cold reading that make you stand out from the crowd. Choreography routines will be taught that are similar to ones you'll encounter at a musical audition. You'll experience singing with live accompaniment and how to make the most of your song selections. Wear comfortable clothes, bring a song selection with piano sheet music and ballet/jazz/tap shoes if you have them. By the end of the day you'll feel confidently prepared to audition for your next show!

IPFW/Sweetwater Music Tech Program Audio Recording Camp

IPFW/Sweetwater Music Tech Program Audio Recording Camp (Grades 9-12)

Students will produce a professional recording session from performance and tracking to mix down. They will choose the musical content, perform at whatever capacity they are comfortable with, record individual tracks, apply audio effects and processing (e.g., reverb, EQ and compression), add virtual instruments if desired, mix down to stereo and burn a CD. The IPFW facilities include a Pro Tools HD 3 system with an automated 32-channel control surface and professional-quality microphones and pre-amps. The Rhinehart Recital Hall will be used as the tracking studio. Students will learn about mics and placement, how to use a patch bay, how to use the industry-standard Pro Tools digital audio workstation and other skills required in the contemporary recording studio. This camp will be led by Christopher Rutkowski, professor of music composition and technology and director of the IPFW/Sweetwater music technology program.

Creative Digital Photography Art (Grades 9-12)

Look at the world around you with an artistic and conceptual perspective! Learn to think out of the box and create photos that can be used for more than images saved on your phone or computer. There will be a take-home project completed during this class that will use your photography as art! We will be photographing the world around us and may have the opportunity to work with live models or still objects in a studio. You also will learn the art of critiquing your work and the work of classmates, as we explore the many ways to see our photography. Bring a basic 35mm or standard digital camera (know the basics of it before class starts) and your laptop. You will be emailed instructions on downloading a free editing software program prior to the beginning of class and you also will be given instruction on printing 15-30 4x6 photos for use in class. Come to class prepared to have fun photographing the world around you. This class will be taught by professional photographer Tanya Myers.

This camp will explore songwriting as a group, in teams and individuals using a variety of techniques to free common inhibitions associated with the creative process. Students should bring a notebook and writing utensil and will be encouraged to bring an instrument if desirable. No prior musical or songwriting experience is necessary for this course. Students can choose to perform their final song in a public performance or have them performed by the instructor at the end of the week. Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass and Guitar*

Run by Fort Wayne Philharmonic musician Marcy Trentacosti, this camp features string orchestra, chamber ensembles and group classes for violin, viola, cello, bass and guitar*. Students are coached by Philharmonic musicians and must have a minimum of two years of string instruction to take part in this camp. Learn new music in a week of string orchestra, group classes and chamber music playing.

*If interested in guitar, there are only four slots available and they are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Bring a sack lunch and drink to class each day. There will be a music recital at 12:30pm the last day of class.

Drawing for High School Students

Drawing for High School Students (Grades 9-12)

This drawing fundamentals class will introduce students to the mechanics and principles of drawing, combining drafting and freehand methods, and will provide the necessary skills to allow students to develop ability and confidence using the language of two-dimensional drawing. The materials, methods and the formal ideas of perspective and the illusion of creating a three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional plane occupy the majority of this class. All work will be done from observation. Specific techniques will include measuring, positive/negative space, line, shape, volume and various methods of controlling value to create form. This class will focus on value, so we will use only pencil and charcoal. All supplies provided. Class will be taught by IPFW department of fine arts professor John Hrehov.

Metalsmithing Basics

Metalsmithing Basics (Grades 9-12)

Learn basic fabricating techniques to create rings and pendants using copper and silver. Study silver brazing, metal stretching and forming by hand, using polished hammers and casting. All skill levels are welcome and all tools, studio equipment and materials are included. Please note that students will use metalsmithing equipment such as acetylene torches, hammers, saws and files. The activities involved in this class will be under the direct supervision of IPFW staff, and the safety of participants will be our primary concern. However, there are certain risks involved when using the equipment necessary for a class of this nature. Because of this, parents will be required to sign a waiver, release and hold harmless document as a condition of enrolling their child in this class. This class is taught by IPFW fine arts faculty member Robert Schroeder. Bring a sack lunch and drink to class each day.

Students will work under the direction of seasoned professionals from Windsong Pictures, a nonprofit educational motion picture company founded in 1975. Windsong Pictures has produced more than 200 family-friendly films and received more than 300 educational awards of excellence.

Emerging Artist Recital: Elsie Johnson

Pianist Elsie Johnson is an IPFW graduate (B.M. Piano Performance ’10) and will earn a double master’s degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from Butler University this summer. Her program will include Haydn’s Sonata in G Major, Hob. XVI:39; Schumann’s Symphonic Etudes; Liszt’s Les cloches de Genève, Pastorale, and Sonetto 104 del Petrarca; and Barber’s Sonata.

Emerging Artist Recital: Jason Simon & Friends

This chamber music recital will feature Jason Simon, first-prize winner of the 2012 Indiana Music Teachers Association state collegiate Hoosier Auditions and a junior Piano Performance Major at IPFW. Jason performs together with Dr. Hamilton Tescarollo, Director of Keyboard Studies at IPFW, and string players Caleb Mossburg (violin), Rachel Mossburg (violin), Aaron Mossburg (Viola), and Brian Klickman (Cello). The program will include Mozart's Sonata for two pianos and Dvorak’s Quintet for piano and strings in A Major.

This camp will explore creative songwriting and composition through movement, emotions and sound. The music will be creatively driven by the students and their unlimited imaginative capabilities. Students will compose songs, music and movement from children's stories and childhood interest for a final group performance on the last day of class. Bring a writing utensil and notebook. This class will be taught by professional musician Fernando Tarango.

Piano Camp for Beginners (Grades 4-5)

This piano camp is a great opportunity to see if a student has an aptitude and interest in private piano instruction. It is not required that a student have a piano at home in order to take part; in fact this class may help a family determine if that is a good investment for the future. Students will learn in a small-group setting and will cover basics such as learning notes and major and minor five-finger patterns, triads and arpeggios. This camp is led by IPFW faculty member Carol Hahn, who has taught piano privately for 50 years and has taught Suzuki for the past 29 years.

Grades 4-5: Monday through Friday, June 10-28, 9am to 10am

We will add additional time slots as registration fills.

IPFW Gene Marcus Piano Camp

The IPFW Gene Marcus Piano Camp will allow students to experience a week of intensive piano study with IPFW piano faculty and guests. Daily activities will include group sessions, individual lessons, Alexander technique and music theory classes, supervised practice and a variety of workshops and lectures. Performance opportunities include master classes and recitals. Evening activities will include faculty and guest artist recitals. The camp is for intermediate and advanced students, ages 12-18, and includes both a residential and a commuter option. There is no geographic restriction for attendance at this camp. Students from all areas are welcome to attend.

All camp activities will take place on the campus of Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). IPFW is a Carnegie Community Engaged University that awards Indiana University bachelor’s degrees in music. The camp will be held in the recently built John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center, a facility that provides an ideal learning environment as well as excellent rehearsal spaces, studios and performance halls. Recitals and master classes will be held in Rhinehart Recital Hall, an acoustically superb performance space. Ample practice facilities are available, including a number of rooms with grand pianos.

The 2013 featured guest artist will be Caio Pagano an internationally renowned concert pianist, teacher and scholar. He will be performing a solo recital and presenting a piano master class for camp participants. Pagano has been a distinguished professor of piano at Arizona State University since 1986.

Pianist Elsie Johnson will be this year's "emerging artist." She is a 2010 IPFW graduate (B.M., Piano Performance) and will earn a double master's degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from Butler University in May 2013. Elsie will be joining the camp staff and also performing a solo recital.

Important Notes for Dance Classes
*CAA dance instructors will do their best to place students into appropriate classes based on their age and level. Our suggestions are made with the students’ development and progress in mind. Our goal is to properly place all students in classes that will maximize their opportunities at improving. Please be aware that the ages listed for each class are approximate and the students’ ages in each class may vary slightly.

Although there are certain requirements and expectations for various classes, we do understand that students and parents may choose not to follow our recommendations for different reasons. If this is the case, please make the staff aware of your situation.

**Also, please be prepared. Occasionally, if a dance class fails to meet minimum enrollment requirements, we will adjust the schedule and move the other dance classes to fill those time slots.

A dance recital will take place on the last day of class; families and friends are invited to attend. Costumes for the recital will be provided but the following items will be required for class:

Pre-Dance and Ballet Clothing Requirements
Girls: Solid color leotard, pink tights and pink leather ballet slippers
Boys: White t-shirt, solid color pants and black leather ballet slippers
Tap Clothing Requirements

Everyone dress comfortably for movement and wear soft-soled shoes or tennis shoes

Perfect for the younger student, this class is designed as an introduction to dance. The class will explore movement through music, stimulate students’ imagination and promote creativity. It also will give them an understanding of the classroom community, improve social skills and develop fine motor skills all while having fun! Please note that this is not a parent-participation class and that the student should be prepared to take part in this class independently.

Ballet I (ages 4-5*)

This class will introduce younger students to basic ballet vocabulary and technique in a structured yet fun setting. Simple coordination, musicality, rhythm and concentration will be emphasized. Students are encouraged to explore space and enjoy dancing.

This class is suitable for beginners and will cover the fundamentals of classical ballet technique. It is a more formal setting that will give students the discipline to mature as dancers. The importance of strength, flexibility, rhythm, musicality and memorization will be stressed. Basics of performing will be introduced. It is recommended that students have taken Ballet I but it is not required.

This is a great intro class that will get young students used to making sounds with different parts of the tap shoe. Elements such as toe taps, heel digs, shuffles and ball-changes are taught. Body rhythms and using imaginative play to explore improvisation will be incorporated. There will be an emphasis on dancing to the beat and hearing rhythms of different music.

This class teaches the fundamentals of hip hop movement. It is an upbeat and high-energy class. Stretching, isolations, rhythms, musicality, upper body strength and funky footwork will all be incorporated. Students will learn to memorize choreography by working on a combination each class.
