Behavioral and Mental Health Headlines
× Suicide Prevention Training - Initial Licensure Requirement: As a reminder, applicants for an initial teaching license under IC 20-28-5-3 as of July 1, 2013, are required to show evidence of the successful completion of training in the prevention of child suicide and the recognition of signs that a student may be considering suicide. Providers of suicide training will need to provide participants with a certificate or card verifying completion of the training that license applicants can scan and upload into their online applications and/or provide to their higher education program licensing advisors when applying for their initial licenses. Trainings may be offered by the counseling or teaching programs or information is available at: http://new.ipfw.edu/behavioral/ (see Suicide Prevention).
× American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s (AFSP) Interactive Screening Program (ISP) – Why do Colleges and Universities Need ISP? An estimated 15% of students suffer from depression and other mental disorders that put them at risk for suicide. Each year, 10% of students report that they’ve seriously considered suicide. ISP provides a simple and effective way to proactively identify at-risk students and encourage them to get help. By engaging those in need, ISP supports student mental health, helps students remain in school and protects the institution in the event of a suicide death.
